We're back
Shrug. Stupid Charter.
Still not back yet...
Um, yeah, I'm going to say this is beyond Charter's fault and straight on into Earthlink's fault. Why? Because Earthlink is our technical scapegoat. Hopefully by tomorrow morning we'll be up and running again.
Please use only www.thisisrootbeer.com for Pablos or you will have to log in repeatedly and other weirdnesses.
Charter's Bad
Charter broke something today, and knocked out like half the county's cable internet. Mine and Ryan's are back, but I guess Jeff's isn't. It should be back by tonight.
I misunderestimated them...
I didn't think Charter was going to be as stupid as they were. So www.thisisrootbeer.com was unreachable for a few hours today. I'm working on it... in the meantime try
thisisrootbeer.definitelynotsafe.com.
DNS switch
We've switched to our own DNS server. In 24-48 hours everything will be switched over. Basically this just means more control for us in the long run, and no more banner ads anywhere in the short run.
Twisted4Life is our secondary DNS provider. Thanks guys!
Software upgrades, DNS rumblings
So Jeff apparently opened up the DNS port for us! Way to tell me about it, Jeff :) (note this is Domain Name Service NOT definitely not safe. DNS is the protocol that converts a domain name like google.com into a computer-usable ip address like 216.239.51.100.) So we'll switch over to our own DNS sometime... soon. After that we'll move to djbdns - which is way better than bind.
We MIGHT be getting a new webmail system for definitely not safe members ONLY. We will PROBABLY be getting email addresses for dnsh members - at minimum they will just forward all email directly to your current addresses. FTP will be closed as SOON as blogger moves us over to Dano so we can start using SFTP instead.
Ceviche now has a duct tape racing stripe, plus good luck duct tape scattered throughout nonessential and essential components alike. Why? Because duct tape is friggin awesome, THAT'S why.
And I'm very tired.
Online again
Backup completed. There's still plenty of stuff to prune out (we can't POSSIBLY be using 400MB) but it looks good.
I inadvertantly obliterated a shared-library (think .DLL) that I needed to run the ftp server... thence followed about 30 minutes of - go get OpenLDAP. Figure out how to build it. Realize it needs BDB. Go get BDB. Figure out how to build it. Build it. Install it. Watch OpenLDAP continue to fail to build. Make OpenLDAP stop caring about bdb. Build OpenLDAP. Install it. Check if the library's back yet. It's not. Reconfigure it, with the libraries going to /usr/local/lib. Rebuild. Reinstall. Check if the library is there yet. Yay, it's there. Restart ftp server, sucess! So that's what I've been doing.
First Backup
We're doing our first full backup tonight. I want to be there to babysit it as it goes. We have to take down much of the server to get a safe backup. So it's down for the rest of the night. Tomorrow we'll be back to normal. In the future backups will run at like 3am when nobody cares.
Fixage completed
OK, it was the freakin' network cable. It was an old one that somebody hand-crimped and we guess it just went funny. Ceviche's up and running normally with a different cable. I'm gonna see if we can spare like a 20-30 ft cable so we can put it along the wall instead of just diagonally across Jeff's bedroom. Kyle, got any spares?
We're really back
Jeff unplugged & replugged the network cable and it came back. I think it's either the network card, the plug, or the cable they're using. Shrug. Whatever, it's back up.
Jumped the Gun
ok, Ceviche's doing one of those things it does where it refuses to connect to the network. Technically speaking, everything's up and running and it works fine... just that nobody can actually get to the server. Jeff's working on it...
We're back
Jeff's still fighting back the virus (which has NOT in fact been confirmed as Bugbear, their AV software doesn't recognize it) but he's turned Ceviche back on for us. It'll be up until further notice. Remember to check back here for the latest info ESPECIALLY if the site is unreachable.
Virus at Jeff's
Jeff got hit with the Bugbear virus. It's spreading across his LAN, and he's doing cleanup right now. As a precaution we've shut ceviche down. It's running Linux of course so it's immune to Bugbear but it can get the files dropped onto it which could cause problems, and who knows what else. We'll post when the server's back up.
We're open!
ceviche.status is up. This is the place to come for information about the definitelynotsafe.com/thisisrootbeer.com server, which has been exceptionally prone to downtime in the few weeks since we got it set up. If the main site goes down, check here first! If you don't see anything here within an hour, send Joe or Jeff and email or give us a call - if we haven't posted here, we probably don't know it's down yet. Hey, we can't be everywhere at once :)
Status of Ceviche, the server for Definitely Not Safe Here (definitelynotsafe.com) and Pablo's (thisisrootbeer.com).
