Well servy is once again conscious, and running on 2.6.6 kernel even!
I could not get LVM working from the install-CD, so I forsook this option. I don't anticipate missing it greatly, it was never a problem on the old system.
We're using ext3 instead of XFS. It didn't seem to be worth the extra exoticness, possible instability, and decreased universality; we don't care that much about performance anyway. However, /tmp is its own ReiserFS partition - using Reiser because /tmp will have lots of small files in one directory (which Reiser rocks at) and if there's ever a problem with Reiser... nobody cares, because it's just /tmp.
The Barracuda runs *hot* - 39 C, outside the case in ~70 F ambient room. It is sitting vertically on its 'face', which probably affects the heat dissipation. It seems to be cleared up to 60 though, which is very good news - the BIOS won't even allow the CPU to get that hot, so we should be just fine there.
Still LOTS upon LOTS of stuff to reconfigure. Sleeping for now.

Shout out to
Server-optimized Linux. It rocks. Majorly. Especially its installer, which is simple enough that with some little tweaks to the code you can install it in massively unsupported configurations, such as netbooting, or off an HD, rather than the CD. Plus it's just good. Now if only they'd put qmail back in...
Upgrades..... part one
The plan is to massively upgrade Ceviche's capabilities.
The upgrade consists of the following phases:
PHASE ZERO
-Back up all data
PHASE ONE
-Receive new 80gb hard drive [hdc] (ordered 22 June; arrived 28 June)
-Take server down
-Copy SoL-install CD to hdb (a borrowed 6gb)
-Partition hdc1 = 50mb/1gb/19gb/10gb/?gb; partition hda1 to match the first 20.
-Set up software RAID-1 md0=hda1+hdc1, md1=hda2+hdc2
-Set up /boot on md0
-LVM md1 into /, /usr, /var, /server, /home
-XFS format
-Install SoL
-Reconfigure SoL
-Restore backed-up docs and such
-Take server back up
PHASE ONE POINT FIVE
-Back up all data
PHASE TWO
-Receive motherboard (ordered ??)
-Take server down
-Install motherboard
-Configure & test
-Take server back up
PHASE THREE
